Fall Agronomy Reminders

Harvest

Set Yourself up for Success

Heading into fall we’d like to remind everyone of things that can get done before winter sets in to help set us up for a successful 2025 crop year.

  • Soil sampling – Get an idea of your soil’s nutrient levels to figure out what needs to be applied for the future years. You should try to get samples every 3-4 years. Contact your agronomist to get on your location’s soil sampling list this fall.
  • Spread fall P + K – Take advantage of the time after harvest to get some fertilizer on your fields. Applying it in the fall can help break down the fertilizer and make it more available for the crop come springtime.
  • Spread 98G or Lime – Get your pH levels back to normal on your fields to help with the uptake of nutrients in the soil.
  • Fall burndowns – Spray your herbicide of choice to kill any alfalfa or wheat fields in the fall to clean them up and help prepare them for planting in the spring.
  • Plant cover crops – Get your cover crops in fields that are highly susceptible to erosion. With the heavy rains this year we all saw erosion in some form. Cover crops such as winter rye can be a great way to resolve erosion problems.
  • Start planning for next year – Come up with a plan on what you’ll need for next year. Take advantage of the early order and prepay discounts on seed, fertilizer, and chemicals. November 11th is the Deadline for your best discounts on corn, soybean, and alfalfa seed.
  • Nutrient Management Plans – Let your agronomist know if you will need a Nutrient Management Plan written for 2025. It’s something good to get done through the winter.

The Agronomy Department would like to thank you all for your support of Premier Cooperative. We greatly appreciate it. Good luck with harvest and reach out to your local agronomist with any questions you may have this fall.

As we finish out the year, most of you have completed a successful harvest, spending many hours in the combine or grain cart. During that time, you likely reflected on a few different things. The first thing being how your crop progressed from seed to harvest. You may have considered factors such as stands, emergence, early season weed control, insect impact, nutrient deficiencies, and nitrogen loss. During harvest, you might have noticed issues like rootworm damage, stalk quality, weeds, and disease pressure. The big question is whether these factors affected your yield and how to improve your crop management next year. There may be many answers to that question but one that we can offer is to contact your Premier Cooperative Agronomist. With training, field experience and technology our team has the knowledge and resources to help achieve your goals next year.

I’m writing this newsletter the week of Thanksgiving. I hope you all had a happy Thanksgiving Day with family and friends. I spent last weekend sitting in my tree stand that I affectionately call the Iron Maiden. It isn’t named after the rock group but the medieval torture device. I didn’t get a deer, but I sure got a sore back.
